The Real Reason Women Are Posting Black-and-White Photos With The HashTag #ChallengeAccepted

There has been a trending black and white challenge that has taken over social media for the past few days.

The driving force is a new Instagram challenge that’s ostensibly all about “women supporting women,” accompanied by the hashtag #ChallengeAccepted.

However, the origins of this challenge are more somber than it would seem.

The challenge works when women nominate each other to post a black and white photo image of themselves that they presumptively like. They share their photo, usually with the caption “Challenge accepted” and the hashtag #womensupportingwomen and tag other women to post their own.

Celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington all joined in the challenge.

The challenge started in Turkey in order to raise awareness about the high rates of femicide in the country.

The black and white photo challenge started as a way for women to raise their voices. To stand in solidarity with the women we have lost. To show that one day, it could be their picture that is plastered across news outlets with a black and white filter on top.”

“Turkish people wake up every day to see a black and white photo of a woman who has been murdered on their Instagram feed, on their newspapers, on their TV screens,” Instagram user @beelzeboobs wrote.
