Team Nigeria is ably represented by more women with a number of them setting their eyes on gold.

In this list, we take a look at the 5 athletes who are potential medal winners for Nigeria.

1. Odunayo Adekuroye

Born December, 10, 1993, Odunayo Adekuroye is a Nigerian freestyle wrestler currently ranked No 1 in the 57kg category worldwide.

The 27-year-old won a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 53kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She also won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics, she defeated  Sofia Mattson in the quarter-final.

In June 2021, she beat the world’s best wrestlers to win a gold medal at the United World Wrestling Poland Ranking Series in Warsaw.

2. Brume Ese

Born  January 20, 1996, Ese Brume is a Nigerian athlete who specializes in the long jump.

She is a three-time African senior champion in the women’s long jump and holds a personal best of 7.17 m.

She was the long jump gold medalist at the 2013 African Junior Athletics Championships, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 African Senior Athletics Championships and 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships.

25-year-old Ese made headlines in May 2021 when she beat Chioma Ajunwa’s 25-year long jump record of 7.13m at the Atlanta 96 Olympics.

3. Tobi Amusan

Born 23, 1997, Tobi Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles and also competes as a sprinter.

Currently ranked 4th in the world in the women’s 100 m hurdles, she won the 100m hurdles event in the 2018 Commonwealth and is the 2019 African champion in the event. She is also a two-time African Games champion.

4. Blessing Okagbare

Born 9 October 1988, Okagbare is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specializes in long jump and short sprints.

She is an Olympic and World Championships medalist in the long jump, and a world medalist in the 200 meters. She also holds the Women’s 100 meters Commonwealth Games record for the fastest time at 10.85 seconds and is the African record holder in the 200 m with her run of 22.04 seconds in 2018.

In June 2021, Okagbare became fastest woman in the world after she finished 10.63 at the national Olympics trials in Lagos.

5. Patience Okon George

Born 25 November 1991, Patience Okon George is a Nigerian sprinter. She competed in the 400 metres event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China and also at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

George is a two-time African Championships bronze medallist in the individual 400 metres event. She is also a three-time Nigerian national champion in the 400 metres.

In 2019, George won the gold medal in the women’s 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco
