The first Friday of October is celebrated as World Smile Day. This year 2021, the occasion is being marked on 1 October.

You may say, what is the hullabaloo about a smile? Well, a smile is everything from setting the tone in a gathering to being the game-changer.

Remember, when you smiled at someone and the person smiled right back at you giving you that comforting feeling, that’s the power of a smile.

It is no wonder World Smile Day was created. The World Smile Day started in 1999 and originates from the first drawing of a smiley face – the symbol we have all come to know – drawn by graphic artist Harvey Ball in 1963.

The theme of World Smile Day is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile” and this occasion is all about being kind. The day is celebrated by giving back to the community and committing random acts of kindness.

1. Relieves stress

When stressed and feeling tired and overwhelmed, smiling activates and relieves your stress response.

Studies show that individuals who had to face stressful situations while smiling were found to have lower heart rates compared to those who weren’t smiling.

2. Boosts the immune system

Did you know that laughing or smiling helps boost your body’s immune system?

Smiling can boost your overall health by helping your immune system to function more effectively. When you smile, your immune function improves which increases your infection-fighting antibodies and improves your resistance to illnesses.

3. Relieves pain

Maybe hard to believe but a good smile acts as a natural drug by relieving pain.

Smiling also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemical. According to studies, laughter actually is the best medicine, as it allows the body to produce its own natural painkillers.

4. Improves mood

Have you felt better after a moody day when someone smiled at you? A study found that facial expressions, such as smiling, can improve one’s mood and increase positive thoughts. A simple smile can trigger the release of neuropeptides that improve your neural communication, as well as neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which can boost your mood.

The physical act of smiling actually activates pathways in your brain that influence your emotional state meaning that by adopting a happy facial expression, you can “trick” your mind into entering a state of happiness.

5. Lower blood pressure

Heart health is very important and laughing or smiling more can help lower your blood pressure. An article, published by The College of Family Physicians, says that the act of laughter can lead to an immediate increase in heart rate and oxygen consumption, followed by a period of muscle relaxation, decreased heart rate, and lower blood pressure.

6. Gives you a younger look

Not only can smiling make you more attractive, but it can also make you look more youthful. The muscles we use to smile also lift the face, making a person appear younger.

A Psychology and Aging study showed that when a group looked at photos of happy faces, they guessed the age of the person in the photo as younger compared to photos of the same person with a neutral or angry expression.
