Lagos Teacher, Bank Driver Jailed 10 Years For Kidnapping Student

An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos has sentenced a 31-year-old Physics Teacher, Oluwajuwon Soetan and his brother, Olugbenga Soetan, a driver with a bank in Lagos to cumulative ten years imprisonment.

Oluwajuwon worked at Bizben Schools located at 14, Abdulsalami Street, off Ndike Street, Obawole, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos.

They were sentenced for conniving to abduct a 14-year-old Student of Bizben schools, Seye Olatunbosun from school and took him to Ilorin, Kwara State and locked him up for three days after they lured him to steal the sum of $8,600 dollars equivalent to N3,543,000 for them from his father, Olasunkanmi Olatunbosun.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs K.K Awoyinka jailed the teacher, Oluwajuwon for six years and a fine of N15,000 and jailed his elder brother, Olugbenga for four years and a fine of N15,000 after she found them guilty in the four of the five counts charges bordering on conspiracy, abduction, unlawful confinement, obtaining money under false pretence, stealing and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace preferred against them by the Police at the Force Investigation Bureau, Force Headquarters, Lagos in the trial spanning about a year.

Magistrate Awoyinka, however, discharged and acquitted the convicts in count three for stealing.

Police Counsel, Friday Mamel had told the Court in the charge marked S/35/2021 that the journey to jail started for the convicts in October, 2021 when the first convict, Oluwajuwon, a Physics teacher with Bizben Schools brainwashed the teenager to go and bring dollars from his parents for him and the teenager obeyed and went to collect the sum of $8,600 equivalent to N3,543,000 his parents kept inside a cupboard and gave it to him.

Mamel informed the court that after the teacher received the dollars, he took the currency to his elder brother, Olugbenga who works with a bank as a driver to help him change the money to Naira equivalent.

He said the first convict, Oluwajuwon later took the teenager to Ilorin, Kwara State to detain him in a room for three days.

Mamel stated that when the teacher learnt that the parents of the teenager were frantically looking for their child, he brought the teenager back to Lagos and dumped him at the Ojodu-Berger bus stop area of Lagos and escaped.

He said it was kind-hearted members of the public who rescued the teenager and contacted his parents who picked him up and took him home.

Mamel said that following the development, the parents of the teenager reported the incident to the police who tracked and arrested the teacher at a hideout in Lagos, leading to his accomplice’s arrest.

He said the offences the convicts committed were punishable under sessions 411, 314, 280, 272 and 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
