Angela Bassett Makes History With Her Role In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Angela Bassett has become the first actress to be nominated for a Marvel movie with her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The 64-year-old woman was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Queen Ramonda.

She became the first woman, the first person of color, and the first actor from Marvel Studios to be nominated for an Oscar for their role in a comic book adaption thanks to the historic nomination.

She is also the second-oldest black woman to receive an acting Oscar nomination, trailing only Ruby Dee, who received a nomination for her part in American Gangster in 2007 at the age of 84.

“I’m very excited about it because I know that it’s been 30 years,” Bassett said. “So it’s not easy to come by landing in just these five coveted slots.”

All season long, Bassett has been honored for her work in the film: She took home a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award for supporting actress earlier this month and is in the running for an NAACP Image Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA Award.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever picked up four other nominations including Best Makeup and Hair, Best Costume Designs, Best Visual Effects, and Best Song.

The winners will be announced during the star-studded Oscars ceremonies on March 12.
