How To Properly Clean Your Hairbrush At Home

how to clean hairbrush and comb

Everyone knows you have to clean your makeup brushes, but for some reason, hair brushes are often forgotten.

Like all your beauty tools, hairbrushes get dirty with repeated use, especially if you’re using styling products on your hair.

A whole lot of stuff can lurk around in those little bristles along with hair clumps and product residue, dust mites, dead skin cells, and oils that can accumulate which could be damaging to your hair in the long run.

Skipping regular cleanses also prevents your brush from working properly, since, with each stroke of a dirty brush, you’re redepositing buildup back onto your strands and scalp, making your hair look greasier.

Cleaning your hairbrushes does not require a lot and it is easy to do.  All you need is;

  • A Clean Toothbrush
  • A Pen Or Pick
  • A Pair Of Scissors
  • 1 Tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 Tsp Shampoo
  • 1 Cup Water
  • A Garbage Bag

Steps to clean a hairbrush

  1. Start by gathering together a clean toothbrush, a pen or pick, a pair of scissors, baking soda, shampoo, and a garbage bag.
  2. Using a pen or pick, loosen the hair from the bottom of the brush and work your way up to the top.
  3. Try to get as much of the hair as possible. Use the pick to scrape the bottom of the brush and dislodge dirt and hair. A comb can also be used to lift away excess hair
  4. Once you have removed the hair, it is time to wash it out.
  5. Blend one teaspoon of baking soda, one teaspoon of shampoo, and one cup of water together.
  6. Apply the mixture to the bristles and the base of the brush gently.
  7. Make sure to clean all parts of the brush because dust and dirt can develop anywhere on it. If a few hairs are still trapped, you can always use a toothbrush to dislodge them
  8. Place the clean, wet brush on a dry towel with the bristles facing down to dry overnight.

You can do this once a week, depending on the dirt you see on your combs/hair brushes. Since we have different types of brushes we definitely cannot wash all of them the same way.

Plastic brushes can withstand a monthly bath since they can dry completely, brushes with wooden handles can get damaged if soaked in water for a long time so it’s best to be careful when washing them.
