Ondo Amotekun impounds 50 unregistered, tinted glass vehicles

The Ondo State Security Network Agency also known as the Amotekun Corps, on Thursday, said it impounded over 50 unregistered vehicles in the ongoing stop-and-search exercise across the state.

The corps said it also impounded vehicles that had tinted glasses without authorisation, adding that hoodlums were using such vehicles to commit crimes in the state.

The Commander of the corps, Akogun Adeleye, said the operation was to foil a plot by some criminal elements and bandits to launch attacks on the state.

According to him, the operation also involved the police and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Adeleye, however, denied the allegation that the security agents were checking phones and demanding vehicle particulars.

He said, “We received an intelligence report from credible quarters that bandits and criminals were trying to carry out nefarious activities in the state. We hinted the general public about two weeks ago to be vigilant. This information became more credible when we heard that some of the places mentioned in the intelligence report, armed robbers had actually struck there; one in Osun and one in Ekiti State.

“Virtually, more than 90 per cent of criminal activities in the state are being perpetrated with the use of unregistered, covered and tinted vehicles. Again, majority of these criminal activities are also being carried out using Okada, especially in the evening.
“To this end, the state government directed all security agencies in the state to collaborate and work together to ensure that after the deadline, whoever uses a dark tinted glass would carry a police permit. Furthermore, the use of unregistered vehicles on roads which makes it difficult to track down criminals was also banned. We have impounded about 50 vehicles that violated the directive since the operation started earlier in the week.

“I don’t see any reason you will buy a car and you choose not to register it for one to three years if you don’t have an ulterior motive. Again, the law is clear on the use of tinted glasses: approach the relevant security agency and obtain a permit.”
