Most Nigerian celebrities have stories of humble beginnings, being poor or broke, or relating tales of suffering. On the other hand, some came from wealthy and privileged backgrounds, whose parents sought to give them the best of life.

Some have very prominent parents for whom no introduction is needed.

1. Rita Dominic

Rita Dominic is a fascinating Nigerian actress and singer who is the youngest of four siblings. Her late parents were medical practitioners; her father was a medical doctor, while her mother was a nursing officer.

The actress was born into the Royal Waturuocha family of the Aboh Mbaisu region in Imo State, Nigeria.

2. DJ Cuppy

Florence Otedola, better known as D.J. Cuppy, is a Nigerian-British entertainer, disc jockey, and celebrity. She launched her new project, House of Cuppy, on August 8th, 2014.

Her father is billionaire Femi Otedola, CEO of Forte Oil Plc. He is also the Nigerian President and CEO of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited.

3. Osas Ighodaro

Osas Ighodaro was born in the Bronx, New York, United States, to Nigerian parents from Edo State. She obtained her first degree in broadcast journalism with dual minors in entrepreneurship and theater from Pennsylvania State University.

4. Tolu Oniru

Tolu Oniru, popularly known as Toolz, is a Nigerian radio personality, talk show host, and presenter. She is best known for hosting the Midday Show on The Beat 99.9 FM. Her father, Oba Abiodun Oniru, was the Oniru of Iruland before he died in 2019.

5. Omawumi

Itsekiri-born singer, Omawumi was born to Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele on April 13, 1982.  After graduating in 2005, she moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked with her family’s law firm, “O.S. Megbele & Associates.”

6. Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi

Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi was born on July 18, 1984, into the popular Olateru-Olagbegi royal family of the ancient Owo town, Ondo State. She is the granddaughter of the late Olowo of Owo, Sir Olateru-Olagbegi II, KBE.

She has a B.A. in Communications from Oakland University, Rochester, and an MSc. in Media and Communications from Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos.

After over a decade at Beat 99.9 FM, Gbemi was appointed as a co-founder and co-executive producer of one of Africa’s entertainment startups, TNC Africa, a digital-focused TV and film production company. She is also the founder of Gbemisoke Shoes.

7. Stephanie Coker

Media personality, Stephanie Omowunmi Eniafe Coker was born on November 28, 1989, to Nigerian parents, but moved to London, UK, at the tender age of one. Her dad is a native of Badagry in Lagos, while her mother hails from Abeokuta.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in media communications from Brunel University in West London.

Her childhood dream was to become a lawyer. While at Brunel, she interned at MTV, Channel Four, and Media Moguls PR. We can only say she had to have had comfortable parents who could afford to pay her bills.

8. Kemi Adetiba

Kemi Adetiba (born January 8, 1980) is a popular Nollywood producer, media personality, and filmmaker. Her father, Dele Adetiba, was an iconic Nigerian sports broadcaster, and a veteran in the advertising and broadcast industry.

Her mother, Mayen, is a civil engineer. She is the first female engineer to be elected to the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ Executive Committee. She is also the first female graduate engineer from the entire south-south zone of Nigeria.

As a child, Kemi was featured in a television commercial for the detergent brand OMO. She holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Lagos.

9. Bolanle Olukanni

Media personality Bolanle Olukanni, who was born on August 19, was raised in four different countries: Nigeria, Israel, Kenya, and America.  Her father, Ambassador Olukanni, was a diplomat who worked in the Foreign Affairs ministry.

She started her primary education at St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, in Lagos, and attended Queen’s College, Lagos, for secondary school. She moved to Kenya, where she attended Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi for part of high school. Before her final year of high school, she moved to the United States, where she attended Wichita Southeast High School in Wichita, Kansas.

She bagged a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago with a double degree (BA in Communications and International Studies).

10. Moet Abebe

Popularly known as Moet Abebe, she is a Nigerian video jockey, presenter, and actress. She is from the popular Abebe family and she is related to the late Stella Obasanjo.

Born in the United Kingdom, she went to Corona Ikoyi Primary School for her primary school education, Dowen College for a year, where she did her part of secondary education before moving to the UK to attend Woldingham Secondary School in  Surrey,

In 2008,  she gained admission to the University of Manchester, where she studied law.

Her journey into the limelight came after she decided to move back to Nigeria in pursuit of a career as a TV presenter.

11. Temi Otedola

Temi Otedola, born on March 20, 1996, is an actress and blogger. She is the younger sister of DJ Cuppy and the daughter of one of Nigeria’s richest men, Femi Otedola.

She studied art history at both the University College London and the University of London. Temi is currently in a relationship with the singer, Mr. Eazi.

12. Zainab Balogun

Zainab Balogun was born in London, United Kingdom, to Nigerian parents. She was raised with a large extended family, predominantly in Clapham, a district of south-west London.

She attended Christ the King Sixth Form College, where she completed her A-levels in law, psychology, and English language & literature. She received a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) from the University of Kent in Medway.
